				<short>The Cicada Fairy dares you to make a wish.</short>
				<long>This is in celebration (if that's the right word) the emergence of the Cicada Brood X this year. I have to admit I don't think I'd ever heard of cicada until a couple of months ago - not a big thing round these parts. The original concept was a request by <a href="http://www.livejournal.com/users/shockwave77598/">Shockwave</a> for a cicada fairy - and that's what he got. "You'll get one wish... and <i>like it</i>." Background al la Rodney Matthews.</long>

				<short>A blue snail girl modelling lingerie.</short>
				<long>Hardly the ideal model for anything other than swimwear. I'm not entirely happy with some of the detail but the textures are nice. This one was relatively quick only three weeks from sketching to finished image. In case you're interested, all the texture painting is done into a 'linear light' layer while the colour is defined using a set of solid colour layers with vector masks that also provide area selection. This has become my standard MO for this style.</long>

				<long>The <a href="http://www.ruinsofmorning.net/viewer.php?gal=misc&amp;img=holli_red_squirrel">original of this character</a> was from 2000, executed in ink on Bristol Board. I'd just intended to scan and vectorise her for printing but decided to play with some cell-shading while I was at it. Pity about the background.</long>

				<short>Pig-girl wielding a huge hammer.</short>
				<long>Pam is executed with the same technique as <a href="http://www.ruinsofmorning.net/viewer.php?gal=character&amp;img=silver">Jack of Staves</a>, a more realistic style that does away with the line art altogether. One thing this shows is how much I've relied on black lines to provide the illusion of contrast in my earlier work. Here I've had to make the contrast as real as possible, with some success, I think. The working title for this one was 'Big Ham'.</long>

		<title>Mystry</title>
		<description>
			<p>The eponymous heroine of Mystry is a troubled young woman living in a vast futuristic city of advanced technology, intolerant religious dogma and underground bohemian movement.</p>
			<p>I finished the first six-page episode of Mystry in Spring/Summer 2000. At the time, I had planned to submit it to some of the anthropomorphic publications (not expecting much beyond some useful feedback), but I wanted to be certain first that I would be able to complete the story to a reasonable deadline, just in case. As it turns out that was probably a wise decision. So far it's taken me two years per episode.</p>

		<title>Lupine Sculpture</title>
		<description>
			<p>I started this sculpture in the summer of 1995. I'd done a lot of research into sculpting methods and decided that the only way to test them was to dive in and do something extravagant.</p>
			<p>The only preparation I'd done was some top, side and forward elevations on a few sheets of A4. I could have spent weeks detailing the designs, but I decided the only way understand what was required and to keep up the enthusiasm for what would undoubtedly be a long term project would be to get on with it.</p>

				<short>The first stage was to construct an armature (a skeleton) which would be the structure's primary support.</short>
				<long>This I built with cheap, 2x4cm pine held together with long galvanised steel screws. As you can see, at this stage neatness was not a concern since it would all be hidden. The wood was cut, drilled and placed as it was needed without worrying about the joins.</long>

				<long>This was made with 2mm galvanised steel wire pinned to the frame with small fencing-tacks. This process required a certain amount of intuition, guessing where shaping was most needed, how to get a piece of wire across the shape and how much space would be needed for the layers of plaster that would be going on top.</long>

				<long>I used a wire mesh (chicken wire) over the wire frame so that the space could be stuffed with newspaper, to which the plaster would readily adhere through the mesh. This turned out to be a far more laborious job than I had suspected, taking several days non-stop work.</long>

The sculpture's hands were quite fiddley so I put those together separately and wired them in at this point. To make sure the plaster would adhere to the base I tacked more wire mesh to the wood so that when the plaster was applied it would set around the mesh and be held in place by it while it dried.The sculpture was fixed to the base at one hand and both feet with steel brackets bent to fit.<br /><br />The sculpture's hands were quite fiddley so I put those together separately and wired them in at this point.</long>

			<description>
				<short>The second layer of plaster was a much finer and much more expensive grade from an art supplies shop.</short>
				<long>I'd started to notice places where I'd made some mistakes in my calculation of the thickness of the plaster needed, such as on the head, places that could now only take a very thin layer without losing proportion. But I'd expected this to be the piece on which I'd make all those kind of mistakes, this was after all my first major piece...<br /><br />I'd taken a break in the work between autumn 1995 and spring 1996 when I decided to take an Access Course to go back to university. I started again the following summer with this layer but after passing the course I had a huge pile of preliminary reading for my literature degree. Unfortunately, about halfway through this layer I realised that I wouldn't have time to finish before leaving and there was no way to take it with me nor any time to work on it and my course at the same time. So this is the state in which it remains... for now.</long>

				<short>1999, and I had the urge to drag the sheet off this piece and have another crack at it.</short>
				<long>I used the rest of the plaster I had left from three years previously and managed to take the second layer down to the ankles and tail before I ran out of time (the house is being renovated). You can probably see that the plaster is very roughly applied; the idea here is that after covering the surface with a good thick layer I can then smooth it down and carve the detail into to it. There are still a few places, such the arms, which will need extra thickening so that the musculature can be properly carved - that was the reason for the charcoal marks you can see in the pictures of the first layer.</long>

			<description>
				<short>The hands will prove to be the most difficult to finish.</short>
				<long>I kind of wish I'd kept the fingers together and made the left hand a fist resting on the knuckles. Anyway, I wrapped the wire armature fingers in scrim (an open-weave fabric) to give something for the plaster to adhere to. I made the plaster good and thick - without actually losing the definition of the fingers - so there was plenty of room for carving the final forms on the knuckles and claws.
					<br /><br />Once again I have to leave this one. I'm making a move to Dublin for a year or two and in the mean time the house that has been it's home for the last five years is to be sold. I'm really not sure what's going to happen to it now - it's extremely heavy and not the kind of thing to be shipped around Europe. I'm sure customs would be very interesting in taking lump-hammer to it anyway.
					<br /><br />There is a possibility that it will just have to be... disposed of.
					<br /><br /><span style="color: red;">[Update]</span> Well, I thought this sculpture was gone for good when I arrived in Dublin last year without it. But two months later I came down to answer the door and there it was sitting in the lobby. I hadn't got around to pounding it into pieces before I left and it turns out my father just didn't have the heart to either, instead he made one last van trip across the Irish Channel (he's moving back to Ireland himself) to get it to me. The thing only weighs about 55kg but its not exactly the kind of thing you can heft over your shoulder, it's just the wrong shape for one person to carry. In the end it took four people to haul it up the four narrow flights of stairs to the apartment.
					<br /><br />The apartment is a duplex in an old Georgian terrace with a small kitchen, bathroom, living room and a work/bedroom. The latter is the only room with any space left in it so that's where it is, crouched behind me as I write this, facing into the corner - not very dignified but preferable to being smashed into bits I'm sure.
					<br /><br />Seeing as he's going to be around for a while longer I should probably come up with a title...
					<br /><br /><span style="color: red;">[Update]</span> 2003: The sculpture (still unnamed) has been moved to a small town in Wexford where he's distressing the locals.

			<p>This is the first major sculpture I worked on. By "major" I mean the first that I designed and executed to a plan. It's also my first anthropomorphic (that is, humna/animal) sculpture whereas my previous minor pieces had been of purely animal or abstract forms. The design is loosely based on a creature I described in a short story I wrote the previous year. I may get around to reproducing the story here for you thought at the moment I'm reworking it to submit to another clutch of small-press magazines.</p>

				<short>Very rough sketch used in the design of the Rilla sculpture.</short>
				<long>It's impossible to plan the paths of every piece of wire in a sculpture like this. the only way to know how it is going to work is to make it work. The sketches used, like this one, were really only used to measure proportion of the silhouette inside with the wire would be fitted.</long>

			<method>Steel and Copper Wire</method>
			<description>
				<short>The construction took about two weeks, on-and-off.</short>
				<long>The materials are two types of wire - 2mm galvanised steel wire and 1mm copper wire (I think) - both of which were scavenged. The steel wire had been left in a garden for a year or two and was nicely weathered making it darker and less shiny, I don't think shiny new wire would have had quite the same effect. The design of the creature was just a few simple and very rough drawings. I didn't design the path of every length of wire - far too laborious - relying instead on intuition. The tools were just a pair of fairly hefty wire-snips and two pairs of pliers, one of which had a thick rubber-band around the handles so it would hold itself in position when released (very useful with only two hands).</long>

			<description>
				<short>Achieving symmetry was probably the hardest part.</short>
				<long>For the long gentle curves the steel wire could be shaped by hand, but for the tighter turns the pliers had to be used. For the body it simply required a good eye and spatial awareness. For the wings I made a drawing to scale, traced it through to the other side of the paper to reverse it and then shaped the wire against the drawing. The steel wire is held together with coils of copper wire that could be easily loosened and tightened for adjustment with the two pliers.</long>

			<description>
				<short>The whole construction is about 5ft across and weighs next to nothing.</short>
				<long>With a small loop of wire at the back it hangs comfortably on the wall. I had originally intended to have it leaning out from the wall with the wings swept back but realised during the design stage that this would be almost impossible to hang properly.</long>

			<description>
				<short>There's a good bit of my blood gone into this sculpture and my fingerprints didn't grow back for two weeks.</short>
				<long>If you're thinking of having a go with this medium be warned that your fingers will be a mess by the end - snipped wire always has a sharp edge. I also found that my fingertips were slightly callused for some time afterward. Gloves would have made the work impossible - ironically you need the sensitivity to manipulate the wire properly. That said, I enjoyed working in this medium immensely, it's relatively quick, and looks great. I'd recommend it to anyone.</long>
